The Renaissance was a fundamental period for the construction of the cultural identity of Europe. At the core of this volume is a crucial moment of Italian-Polish cultural relations. The Senate Library of Gdansk has been for centuries at the center of the culture of the Hanseatic city. The Library was built around the large donation of books belonging to the Italian Marquess Bernardino Bonifacio d'Oria, a religious refugee. An extraordinary collection gathered in almost half a century in the main printing centers of Europe. Through the analysis of his books and his notes, the volume scrutinizes the idea of space, the perception of the "others" and the philosophical reflections of a sixteenth century reader.
